“Hello David, I’m Matt”

American Idol had ended, his first album was out, and David was the talk of the town. He had just returned home to Utah from performing in the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade and was late to the shoot because he had to lose a van full of girls who were following him. We turned a neighbor’s garage into a make-shift studio and David was on high alert anytime a car passed by. It was a grey November afternoon. I was nervous/excited. These are just a few things I remember from this first time meeting and working with David. I was fortunate to work with him again a number of times after — from assisting on his second album cover to shooting images for magazines and an overseas album.

Black tie affair

I had picked up the shirt and pants at Target. I thought it would be fun to dress him up but keep it youthful with the Chuck Taylor’s — which were his own. I’ll never forget trying to get my assistant, Lindsay’s, attention, while I tied the tie on David. I was trying to get her to take a behind-the-scenes picture but she wasn’t catching on. After a few failed “read my mind through my eyes” glances at her, David finally turned and said “He want’s you to get a picture of this.”

So much for being discrete.

Grant & Zoi // Bridal session

Little Zoi’s all grown up and getting (got) married

I’m sure if you scrolled long enough through this blog, you might find a couple photos of a very young Zoi. I’ve known her and her family for a number of years and I was stoked that she asked me take her bridals (as well as her engagement pictures) for her and Grant.

Just kidding.

But, seriously.

A Simple White Shirt - Revisited

Ten Years Ago

It’s hard to believe it’s been 10 years since I put a call out on Facebook for some willing subjects to step in front of my lens. All I asked was that they wear a white shirt.

A Saturday in the studio

This may have been the biggest personal project that I took on, at the time. I had blocked out a Saturday and scheduled a majority of the subjects one right after the other — spending 15 minutes or less with each individual. It was a great exercise in getting a stranger relaxed in front of the camera in a small amount of time.

The Square Magazine office acted as the impromptu studio space — a space no larger than a small living room. Black fabric and a single strobe completed the rest of the set-up.

Soccer player, David Horst

Horsting around

Soccer player, David Horst, was one of those dream subjects -- up for anything and more than willing to play in front of the camera. I had a blast working with him.

Hunter Woodhall // Olympian

Storm chaser

Met up with Hunter last May and shot these in about 15 minutes before we were nearly blown across The Great Salt Lake. With a storm on our heals, Hunter was still ready and willing to shoot. Really cool dude. Excited to see what he does in Tokyo in 2020.
